The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls basketball squad mentored by head coach Ruben Besa and assistant coaches Arturo Gonzalez, Norman Carreon and Rachel Menchaca journeyed East on Highway 90 this past Tuesday, November 28, 2017 to tipoff against the Medina Valley Lady Panthers in Castroville, Texas.
The first half of the non-district hoops matchup was a pretty hotly contested game with both teams seeking to exploit each other’s weaknesses. The visiting Lady Eagles got vital scoring production from Sophie Rodriguez and Paola Hernandez from inside and outside the pant to ta a narrow 23 to21 lead into the halftime break over the Lady Panthers.
After a few minor adjustments to their offensive and defensive scheme the Lady Eagles came out red hot in the second half torching the nets with layups, jumpers as well as from the charity stripe with the Lady Eagles getting key scoring contributions from their entire starting lineup as well as two-sport standout Brooke Diaz continuing her dominance on the boards recording a team and game high 13 rebounds which led to several fast break points. The Lady Eagles defense also produce points with timely steals and forcing the Medina Valley squad to commit several turnovers. The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Panthers 33 to 17 in the second half of this game to come away with the well earned 56 to 38 victory over the home standing Medina Valley Lady Panthers with Sophie Rodriguez leading the victorious Lady Eagles in the scoring department with 19 points followed by teammate Paola Hernandez who pumped in a total of 17 points.
