The playoff bound C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor ventured to the famed Honey Bowl in Uvalde, Texas this coming Friday, November 10, 2017 to tangle with the always tough Uvalde Coyotes in a 7:30 PM regular season and district gridiron finale.

The home standing Uvalde Coyotes entered this matchup sporting an overall season record of 5-4 and a district mark of 2-2 while the visiting Mavericks came in with an overall season record of 3-6 and a district mark of 2-2.  Lady Luck was not on the Mavericks side of the field on this night as they fell to the Coyotes by the final score of 27 to 6.

The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks did however manage to tally the first points of the game which unfortunately proved to be their only points of the game with a 35 yard scoring drive that was capped off by a four yard keeper by quarterback Ethan Johnston with 2:25 remaining in the opening period.  The Mavericks two-point pass conversion fell incomplete but they took the early 6 to 0 lead over the Coyotes.

The Coyotes countered with a four play 78 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 40 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Mata to running back Domingo Davila with 1:15 left in the first quarter.  The point after attempt was no good so the score remained tied at 6 all.

Late in the second quarter the home standing Coyotes broke up the 6 all tie with a five play 25yard scoring drive punctuated with a one yard pass from Michael Mata to wide receiver Joshua Sandoval with 2:37 left in the first half.  Keith Pendleton, Jr. tacked on the point after to give the Coyotes a 13 to 6 lead over the Mavericks heading into the halftime locker room.

In the third quarter the Uvalde Coyotes extended their lead with a pair of touchdowns the first of which was a 15 yard touchdown pass from Michael Mata to Sotero Martinez with 5:21 showing on the third quarter clock.  Sotero Martinez tacked on a two point conversion run to give the Coyotes a 21 to lead in this game.  The second and what proved to be the final score of this game was a 68 yard sprint to pay dirt by D’Andre Carroll with just 9 seconds left in the third period.  The point after attempt was no good but the Coyotes now enjoyed a 27 to 6 lead over the Mavericks and managed to hang on to that winning margin when the game’s final buzzer sounded off.

The C.C. Winn Mavericks who will be venturing into the post season for their second year in a row now turn their attention to next Friday, November 17, 2017 when they venture to Schertz, Texas to square off against the tough Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles at Lenhoff Stadium in the UIL Region IV Class 5A bi-district round.  Kickoff time is scheduled for 7:30 PM. Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Mavericks the very best of luck against the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles and invites the entire Mavericks Nation as well as the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to make the trip to Schertz, Texas and support the mighty Mavericks, GO MAVERICKS!
