The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team under the direction of head coach Eric Villasenor resumed their District 29-5A gridiron battles on Friday, November 3, 2017 when they hosted the current district co-leading Floresville Tigers in a key 7:30PM encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.  The visiting Floresville Tigers ventured into this game with an overall season record of 5-3 and an unblemished district mark of 3-0 while the home standing C.C. Winn Mavericks entered this contest sporting and overall season record of 3-5 and a district mark of 2-1.

The home standing Mavericks gave the district co-leading Tigers quite a battle but unfortunately came up a little short as the Floresville Tigers escaped with a narrow 28 to 20 victory over the Mavericks but in the process the Mavericks clinched a post season playoff berth for the second year in a row. as a result of the outcome of the other games played around the district.  The Mavericks bi-district round playoff opponent will be the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles with the date, site and time to be determined.

The C.C. Winn Mavericks stunned the favorite Floresville Tiger so the second offensive series of the game by engineering a well executed four play 98 yard scoring drive,  Faced with a third and long from the shadows of their own goal post, Mavericks quarterback Ethan Johnston connected with wide receiver Luis Olvera with a 22 yard pass completion out to the Mavericks 24 yard line to pick up a crucial first down, On the very next play from scrimmage Ethan Johnston connected with wide receiver Jose Blanco hitting him in stride down the middle and Jose Blanco turned on the after burners all the way to pay dirt with 8;37 left in the opening quarter.  Ernesto Fuentes tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks the early 7 to 0 lead over the Tigers.

The Mavericks then proceeded to extend their lead on their next offensive series orchestrating a five play 64 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a two yard blast into the end zone by running back Luis Rodriguez with 2:50 remaining in the first quarter.  Ernesto Fuentes split the uprights with the point after to give the Mavericks a 13 to 0 lead over the Tigers.

After a short kick on the ensuing kickoff the Tigers answered back with a 59 yard scoring drive culminating with 1 yard run by standout running back Salih Williams with just 36 seconds left in the opening period.  Francisco Lozano added the point after to narrow the Mavericks lead to 14 to 7.

The Mavericks defense set up the score of the game as Mavericks defensive back German Velasquez registered an interception and returned it 30yards to the Floresville five yard line but the Mavericks were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct due to the excessive celebration which brought the ball out to the Floresville 20 yard line where a couple of players later wide receiver Luis Olvera took the handoff around right end and into the end zone with 7:08 left in the second period.  The point after attempt failed but the Mavericks now had a 20 to7 lead over the Tigers.

After another very short kick on the ensuing kickoff the Floresville Tigers responded with a 56 yard scoring drive capped off with a one yard plunge by tailback Kane Numera with 2:3 remaining before halftime.  Francisco Lozano converted the point after to make the score 20 to14 in favor of the C.C. Winn Mavericks heading into their halftime locker room.

Unfortunately the second half of this contest belonged to the Floresville Tigers as they took the second half kickoff and manufactured a go ahead 55 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a 32 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Darian Mayberry to wide receiver Colton Payne with 9 :37 showing on the third quarter clock.  Francisco Lozano split the uprights with the point after to give the Floresville Tigers a slim 21to 20 lead over the Mavericks.

The Tigers then closed out the scoring in this contest with a one yard scoring drive that culminated with a 5 yard run to pay dirt by running back Salih Williams with 5:42 left in the game.  Francisco Lozano tacked on the final point of the game as the district co-leading Floresville Tigers escaped with the 28 to 20 victory over the valiant C.C. Winn Mavericks who gave the Tigers quite a battle on this night.

The C. C. Winn Mavericks will now reload their arsenal and venture to the famed Honey Bowl in Uvalde, Texas next Friday, November 10, 2017 for a key 7:30 PM gridiron battle against the Uvalde Coyotes with the winner of that matchup finishing in third place in the district  race and the loser finishing in fourth place in District 29-5A.
