The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football squad mentored by head coach Tom Gonzalez has their sights set for this coming Thursday, November 2, 2017 when they entertain the current district leading San Antonio Southwest Dragons in a 7:30PM marquee District 29-6A matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.  This key matchup will pit the district’s top two teams where a victory by the Eagles will more than likely give them a share of the district title depending on the outcome of next week’s regular and district season finales.

The visiting Southwest Dragons will venture into this matchup sporting an overall season record of 7-1 and an unblemished district mark of 5-0.  The home standing Eagle Pass Eagles will enter with a season mark of 6-2 and a district record of 4-1.  The visiting Southwest Dragons employ an old fashioned ground and pound offensive scheme with a potent predominately ground oriented offense that utilizes the services of their really massive offensive line and a very talented, swift and elusive starting tailback. In Sean Ruiz #28

Southwest Dragons starting offense:

QB #9 Damian Lopez: Big, strong & great Arm. must contain & tackle him low. Plays QB, WR & Safety!!

FB #30 Johnny Flores: Leads on Blast and Jet, very good blocker. Must attack him and keep outside free.

FB #34 Marcus Luna: Leads on Blast and Jet, very good blocker. Must attack him and keep outside free.

RB #28 Sean Ruiz: Very fast & athletic player (plays Corner). Runs Jet and very explosive runner.

TE #42 Jesus Garcia: Very good blocking TE, stays on his man. Will fold to play side.

TE #84 Tommy Garay: Very good blocking/receiving TE. Will fold to play side.

LT #70 Christian Adame: Very big & strong lineman, stays on his blocks. Will fold to play side.

LG #79 Elijah Amaro: Very good lineman, must stay low. Cannot stand up, play technique.

C #61 Joshua Martinez: Big & strong, must stay low. Usually tries to reach you to play side.

RG #76 Roger Lara: Big & strong lineman who uses his weight well. Must stay low. Play technique.

RT #63 Steve Segura: Big, strong & quick, must stay low. Very good on fold & they like to pull him.

Defensively the Dragons feature a very physical and explosive basic 3-4 scheme with a solid front line of nose tackle Marcus Luna #34 and a pair of stellar defensive ends in Tommy Garay #84and Roger Muzquiz #35 that are very relentless with their pressure off the ball.  The Dragons heart and soul of their defensive unit are their very solid against the run with the likes of inside linebackers Tommy Pusateri #37and Bostin Crisp #3 along with outside line backers Anthony Sanchez #31 and Juan Flores #30.  The Dragons secondary unit will be patrolled by corners Rosendo Olague #13 and Sean Ruiz #28 with Martin Torres #2 and Cade Scott #8 as the safeties.

The Eagle Pass Eagles will counter with their potent offensive scheme that is equally explosive via their ground attack as through the airway.  Handling the rushing duties for the Eagles will be standout tailback Dee Andre Torres who is nearing the magical 1000 yard rushing club as well as multi-talented slot back Jose Riojas and staring signal caller Richie Luna.  When the Eagles take to the airway they utilize the talents of their quartet of fast sure handed receivers with the likes of Norby Zavala, Jose Riojas, Albert Guevara and Rey Mendoza.

Defensively the Eagles “Land Sharks” frontline will be tested heavily all game long and must be able to dominate in the trenches with the likes of Moi Rocha, Mario Torres, Sebastian Hernandez and David Santos. The line backing duo of Haran Rodriguez and David Kypuros will also have a busy night providing run support. The Eagles defensive secondary crew will pull double duty covering both the pass and run against the Dragons but you can be assured that they will be ready for that challenge.

Eagle Pass Sports Central wishes the mighty Eagle Pass Eagles the very best of luck against the Southwest Dragons and invites the Loyal Legion of Eagles faithful as well as the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium this coming Thursday night and support the Eagles. GO EAGLES! BEAT THE DRAGONS!
