Luvin De Leon shatters City & School Rushing Mark

            The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football squad under the tutelage of head football coach George Ruiz riding a two game winning streak took to the gridiron at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center on Friday, September 30, 2011 to tangle with the Laredo Martin Tigers under the guidance of former C.C. Winn Mavericks head football coach David Charles who also ventured into this key District 29-5A football matchup on a two game winning streak.

 

            The home standing Mavericks received the game’s opening kickoff, but was forced to punt the ball over on fourth down.  The visiting Martin Tigers initiated their first offensive series of the night from their own 45 yard line.  The Tigers mounted what seemed to be a sure scoring drive when they drove down to the Maverick’s 15 yard line but the stingy and hard hitting Mavericks defense forced the Tigers to cough up the ball which the Mavericks recovered at their own 16 yard line.

 

            After a false start penalty moved the ball back to the 11 yard line Mavericks standout running back Luvin De Leon the district’s leading rusher gave the Mavericks faithful in the stands a preview of coming attractions as he took the handoff from quarterback Jaime Vargas broke through the line of scrimmage, turned on his sprinter’s speed and busted loose on an electrifying 89 yard touchdown run with 7:23 showing on the first quarter clock.  The point after attempt was blocked but the Mavericks had taken the early 6 to 0 lead

 

            After the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers began another drive deep into Mavericks territory but once again the Mavericks defense rose to the occasion and forced another Laredo Martin fumble to nullify the potential scoring drive.

 

            The Mavericks third offensive series of the game saw the Mavs engineer a predominately ground oriented 66 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 5 yard scamper to pay dirt by Luvin De Leon with 9:43 left in the second period.  The point after attempt was no good but the Mavericks had now taken a 12 to 0 lead over the Tigers. 

 

            The Laredo Martin Tigers finally got into the scoring column on their fourth offensive series of the game when the mounted a 59 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 16 yard keeper by quarterback Albert Estrada with 6:45 left in the second quarter.  Ricardo Navarro tacked on the point after to narrow the Mavericks lead to 12 to 7.

 

            After the ensuing kickoff, the Mavericks offense trotted onto the field to start next series of downs from their own 20 yard line.  On the first play from scrimmage, Luvin De Leon took the handoff found a crease and showcased his speed once again as he uncorked a sensational 80 yard run to the promise land with 6:31 left before halftime.  The Mavericks failed to convert the two-point conversion attempt but managed to take an 18 to 7 lead over the Tigers into their halftime locker room.

 

            The Martin Tigers received the second half kickoff and immediately implemented the halftime strategy by orchestrating a 9 play 57 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 5 yard touchdown run by running back Fermin Gutierrez with 8:10 showing on the third quarter clock.  The Tigers successfully tacked on the two point conversion to make the score 18 to15 in favor of the Mavericks.

 

            Disaster struck on the Mavericks next offensive possession when the Mavs fumbled the ball away after a short pass completion which the Tigers recovered at the C.C. Winn 38 yard line.  The Tigers capitalized on the turnover with a 6 play scoring drive that culminated with a 7 yard TD pass from Albert Estrada to wide receiver Edgar Benavides with 5:26 left in the third period.  Ricardo Navarro’s point after gave the Tigers a 22 to 18 lead over the Mavericks.

 

            The Tigers only lead of the game last only 13 seconds as after the ensuing kickoff which sailed into the end zone, the Mavericks offense went back to work from their own 20 yard line.  The Mavericks offensive brain trust decided to dial long distance once again with Luvin De Leon busting loose on a record breaking 80 yard touchdown run with 5:13 left in the third quarter.  Abdel Tillery tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 25 to 22 lead over the Tigers heading into the fourth and final quarter of this game.

 

            Late in the fourth period, the Mavericks defense anchored by John Vasquez, Jesus Olvera, Jose Tello, Guadalupe Lopez on the front line and supported by the line backing trio of Eddie Contreras, Gerardo Berain, and  David Garcia who had played an outstanding game up to this point got into the scoring parade themselves when the Tigers snapped the ball over the quarterback’s head and headed into the end zone where the Tigers signal caller recovered with half of the Mavericks defense falling on top of him for a two point safety to increase the Mavericks lead to 27 to 22.

 

            The Mavericks put the icing on the cake on their last offensive series of the game when the orchestrated a time consuming 69 yard scoring drive that was punctuated by none other than Luvin De Leon who registered his fifth rushing touchdown of the night on a 14 yard scamper with 2:16 remaining in the game.  Abdel Tillery split the uprights with the point after providing the finishing touch on the Mavericks well earned 34 to 22 victory over the Laredo Martin Tigers to improve their overall season record to 3-2 and their district mark to 3-1 to move into a three way tie for second place in the district race along with Laredo United and Del Rio.

 

             The fans in attendance at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center were treated to a historic and memorable night as Mavericks standout tailback Luvin De Leon who tallied a total of 5 rushing touchdowns in the process set a new all-time School and City single game rushing record with a mind boggling 380 yards rushing on 28 carries.  De Leon eclipsed his own previous school record of 280 yards set just last season against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs and shattered the previous city record of 309 yards set by the legendary Eagle Pass Eagles running back David Zapata back in 1995 against the Laredo Martin Tigers.  Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates Mavericks record setting running back Luvin De Leon for his truly outstanding achievement but also would like to give credit to the Mavericks unsung heroes the men in the trenches the Mavs offensive line who helped pave the way for De Leon’s record setting mark.  Gabriel Gutierrez #79, Cruz Gutierrez #64, Jamir Flores #74, Jesus Vargas #60, Frank Lopez #75, the two tight ends Mark Perez #85 and Pedro Elizondo #88 and especially his right hand man and lead blocker his trusty fullback Hector Sonora #82.

 

            The Mavericks will now seek to make it four in a row next Thursday, October 6, 2011 when they journey to Laredo, Texas to square off against the tough Laredo LBJ Wolves in a vital 7:00 PM district gridiron matchup at the Laredo United ISD Student Activity Center.
