The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor resumed their district gridiron battles on Friday night October 18, 2019 to host the current district leading San Antonio Harlan Hawks in a 7:30 PM gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The visiting powerful Harlan Hawks who are ranked 4th in the Sub-6A division in the greater San Antonio area entered this game with an unblemished overall season record of 6-0 and a district mark of 2-0 while the home standing Mavericks came in with an overall season record of 3-4 and a district mark of 1-2. The Harlan Hawks’ team overall size, talent and superior speed proved to be too much for the Mavericks to overcome as they fell by the final score of 45 to 16 but you have to give credit to the Mavericks they never gave up and continued to battle throughout the entire game and managed to rush for the second most yards allowed by Harlan in district play.

The visiting highly talented Harlan Hawks wasted no time whatsoever in showcasing their speed as return man Jacory Logan took the game’s opening kickoff on a well executed reverse and sprinted 96 yards down the right sideline all the way into the end zone with only 14 seconds gone from the first quarter clock. Emmanuel De Los Santos tacked on the point after to give the Hawks the early 7 to 0 lead in this game.

After the ensuing kickoff the Mavericks took their turn on offense and were just getting their power ground attack going when disaster struck as they fumbled the ball near midfield which was recovered by the Harlan Hawks at the Winn 46 yard line. The Hawks cashed in on the turnover with a short 46 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 17 yard run to pay dirt by their workhorse running back Aubrey McDade with 7:53 left in the opening quarter. The two-point conversion attempt was no good but the Hawks had increased their lead to 13 to 0.

The Hawks then mounted a 69 yard scoring drive culminating with a 22 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kannon Williams to wide receiver Andreas Spriggs with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter. Kannon Williams then connected with Ethan Esparza with a two-point conversion pass to make the score 21 to 0 in favor of the Harlan Hawks

The Harlan Hawks continued their scoring parade with a pair of scores in the second quarter the first of which was a 40 yard field goal off the foot of placekicker Emmanuel De Los Santos with 10:05 showing on the second quarter clock to extend their lead to 24 to 0.

The second and final score of the first half saw the Hawks orchestrate a 45yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 19 yard keeper by their multi-talented quarterback Kannon Williams with only 33 seconds left before halftime. Emmanuel De Los Santos added the point conversion to give the Harlan Hawks a confortable31 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.

During the halftime break the Mavericks coaching staff came up with a few changes to the offensive and defensive scheme that paid off in the third quarter. In their second offensive series of the second half the Mavericks manufactured an impressive 60 yard scoring drive predominately with their ground attack with quarterback Jose Padilla and running back Ethan Johnston taking turns in toting the pigskin picking up key first downs to sustain the scoring drive. Jose Padilla showcased his speed with a couple of long runs in this series and Padilla punctuated the scoring drive with a one yard keeper with7:57 left in the third quarter. Padilla also added a two-point conversion run.

The Harlan Hawks immediately countered with a 55 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 16 yard touchdown run by running back Aubrey McDade with 6:14 left in the third quarter. Emmanuel De Los Santos tacked on the point after to pad their lead to 38 to 8.

The proud and valiant C.C. Winn Mavericks responded with an impressive 78 yard scoring drive that culminated with a one yard blast to pay dirt by running back Ethan Johnston with just two seconds left in the third quarter. Jose Padilla then connected with Jose Hinojosa with a two-point conversion pass.

The Harlan Hawks closed out the scoring for the night late in the fourth quarter with another 55 yard scoring drive with backup running back Richard De La Garza tallying from 15 yards out and Emmanuel De Los Santos adding the point after to give the Harlan Hawks the 45 to 16victory over the Mavericks who did have a few bright spots in this game with Jose Padilla leading all rushers with 116 yards on 15 carries while teammate Ethan Johnston contributed 98 yards rushing on 28 carries with Padilla and Johnston each scoring one rushing touchdown apiece in this game. Not to be left out was the Mavericks defense who did manage to inflict several punishing tackles throughout the game.
