2019 14-5A D-I Pigskin Preview

Mavericks picked 3rd in District

The much anticipated and long awaited start of the 2019 Texas High School football season is just around the horizon. Here on the local front the C.C. Winn Mavericks under the direction of head coach Eric Villasenor will commence their respective first official preparations for the upcoming season bright and early at 7:00 AM on Monday, August 5, 2019. According to the pre-season prognosticators, the Mavericks are picked to finish third in the District 14-5A Division I race this season.

The Mavericks will return the services of 8 offensive and 5 defensive starters back from a squad that culminated last season with an overall season record of 6-4. The Mavericks offense will be spearheaded once again by three year standout quarterback Ethan Johnston who was the team’s leading rusher and passer. Joining him in providing the offensive fire power will be a pair of sure handed wide receivers with the likes of Jared Roiz and Ernesto Vasquez. The offensive line will be manned by veterans Jaime Rodriguez, Miguel Nino, Daniel Ruiz and Gabriel Gauna.

On the defensive side of the ball the Mavericks who were one of the top defensive units last season not only in District 14-5A Division I but in the entire Region IV Class 5A as well. The Mavericks defensive unit will be led by stellar linebacker Alex Garcia and linebacker Alejandro Ontiiveros as well as a pair of solid defensive backs in Gilberto Vasquez and Angel De La Torre who had an impressive sophomore year.

Other prospects that are expected to contribute heavily this year will be defensive lineman Carlos Soto defensive end Jose Hinojosa, linebacker Emilio Patino quarterback Jose Padilla and quarterback Guadalupe Martinez. The Mavericks will give the famed Maverick Nation a preview of coming attractions on Friday, August 23, 2019 with a 6:30 PM scrimmage against the Laredo United South Panthers in Laredo, Texas.

The 2019 C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team will officially kickoff their season on Friday, August 30, 2019 when they host the Crystal City Javelinas in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
