The mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball squad mentored by head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavedez and Roly Salinas kicked-off their respective Spring Break schedule on Monday, March 12, 2018 with a road trip to Pearsall, Texas to tangle with the Pearsall Lady Mavericks in a high noon non-district softball diamond encounter.

After a scoreless first two innings of play, the visiting C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks broke the scoreless ties erupting for a big four run output in the top half of the third inning with Martha Garcia igniting the rally with a leadoff walk, Kayla Sifuentes followed with a clean single, Ariana Soto belted an RBI double to drive in Martha Garcia with the first run of the game, Briana Soto lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Kayla Sifuentes, power hitting third baseman Daniel Rodriguez stepped up to the plate and blasted a two run homerun way over the fence to give the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks a 4 to 0 lead over the Pearsall Lady Mavericks.

In the top of the fourth inning the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks extended their lead with what would eventually turn out to be the game winning pair of runs with Martha Garcia stroking a leadoff double, Kayla Siuentes singled to put runners at the corners, Sifuentes promptly stole second to get into scoring position, Ariana Soto continued to swing a red hot bat coming through with a clutch fence ratting two RBI double to give the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks a 6 to 0 lead over Pearsall.

But the story of this game was the brilliant pitching of Angie Escamilla who simply unhittable through four complete innings inside the circle hurling a potential no-hitter but in the bottom of the fifth frame the Pearsall Lady Mavericks broke up the no-hitter with a double followed by a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs, Pearsall’s leadoff batter stepped up to the plate and narrowed their deficit courtesy of a grand slam homerun but Angie Escamilla maintained her composure and did not allow any further damage enabling the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks to come away with the well earned 6 to 4 victory over the Pearsall Lady Mavericks to improve their overall season record to 15 wins with 7 losses.

The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks will return to the field this coming Thursday, March15, 2018 when they journey to Floresville, Texas to open their respective campaign for the District 29-5A softball title with a key 2:00 PM matchup against the Floresville Lady Jaguars.
