The Thundering C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football squad under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor ventured to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas to square-off against the tough Harlandale Indians on Friday. October 11, 2019 in a vital 7:30 PM District 14-5A Division I gridiron encounter at the venerable Harlandale Veterans Memorial Stadium located on 4002 Roosevelt Ave. The visiting Mavericks entered this contest sporting an overall season record of 3-3 and a district mark of 1-1 while the home standing Indians came in with a season mark of 2-3 and a district record of 0-1. Numerous costly penalties and mental mistakes proved to be too much to overcome for the Mavericks as they fell by the final score of 31 to 19.

The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks managed to dent the scoreboard first with a 45 yard scoring drive that was capped off by tailback Ethan Johnston who blasted his way into the end zone from three yards out with 5:31 showing on the first quarter clock. Mavericks’ placekicker Almikar Ramos tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks the early 7 to 0 lead over the Indians.

The home standing Harlandale Indians countered early in the second quarter with a 39 yard Field Goal by placekicker Albert Martinez to narrow the Mavericks lead to 7 to 3. But the proud C.C. Winn Mavericks stormed right back with a well orchestrated with a75 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a sensational 63 yard touchdown run around right end by the fast footed wide receiver Joe Garza who took the pitch from quarterback Jose Padilla and showcased his speed by outrunning the entire Indians defense down the right sideline on his way to pay dirt with 7:53 left before the first half. The point after was no good but the Mavericks now held a 13 to 3 lead over the Indians.

But then the dreaded yellow hankies began to turn the tide in this game as costly penalties against the Mavericks enabled the Indians to sustain a pair of scoring drives late in the first half the first of which culminated with a four yard keeper by the Indians quarterback Nicholas Veliz with 3:08 left in the second quarter with Albert Martinez adding the point after to narrow the Mavericks lead to 13 to 0. The second touchdown was capped off with a 21 yard touchdown pass from Nicholas Veliz to wide receiver Ruben Gonzalez with just 15 seconds left before halftime. Albert Martine converted the point after to give the Indians a 17 to 13 lead over the Mavericks heading to their respective halftime locker rooms.

Early in the third quarter the Harlandale Indians mounted another scoring drive that resulted into a five yard touchdown run by running back Ariel Casso with 9:15 showing on the third quarter clock. Albert Martinez split the uprights with the point after to extend the Indians lead to 24 to 13 over the Mavericks.

The Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks who never give up no matter what the situation may be fought back with an impressive predominately ground oriented 59 yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter culminating with a brilliant 46 yard sprint to pay dirt by their talented tailback Ethan Johnston with 11:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion attempt fell short but the Mavericks had now narrowed their deficit to 24 to 19.

However Lady Luck was not on the Mavericks side on this night as the Harlandale Indians managed to tack on an insurance score with an 8 yard run into the end zone by running back Ariel Casso with 9:06 left in the game. Albert Martinez closed out the scoring in this game with the point after enabling the Harlandale Indians to come away with the hard fought 31 to 19 victory over the valiant C.C. Winn Mavericks who truly played their hearts out. Mavericks tailback Ethan Johnston led all rushers in this game with 179 yards on 25 carries and tallied a pair of touchdowns while teammate Joe Garza contributed 61 yards rushing on only two carries and tallied one touchdown,

The Mavericks return home this coming Friday, October 18, 2019 to host the current district leading San Antonio Harlan Hawks in a 7:30 PM district gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium.
