The long awaited14th annual Texas High School football game between the visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks under the direction of head football coach Eric Villasenor and the home standing Eagle Pass Eagles under the tutelage of head football coach Tom Gonzalez finally kicked off on Friday, September 13, 2019 with a 7:00 PM non-district gridiron encounter which the public and the players past and present as well as both coaching staffs have referred to as being just the next game on the schedule and nothing else. The game was played before a jammed packed Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium where a near capacity estimated crowd of 7800 fans attended to witness the latest edition of this local high school football series.

Just as predicted by Eagle Pass Sports Central field possession, turnovers and penalties set the tone early and would play a vital role in determining the winner of this matchup as the Eagles defense forced the Mavericks to punt on the Mavericks first offensive series in this game. The Mavericks punter uncorked a very good punt deep into Eagle Pass territory but the Mavericks were penalized and were forced to re-punt the ball and it greatly paid off as the snap from center sailed way over the punter’s head which allowed the Eagles to take over at the C.C. Winn 11 yard line.

The Eagles quickly capped off the short 11 yard scoring drive when backup running back Isaac Caballero plowed into the end zone from one out with 8:32 showing on the first quarter clock. Eagles’ placekick Erick Ramirez tacked on the point after to give the Eagles the early 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.

In the second quarter the Mavericks mounted a promising scoring drive that saw them take the ball all the way down to the Eagle Pass 7 yard line but costly penalties plagued the Mavericks which saw them having to turn the ball over on downs at the Eagle Pass 33 yard line.

The Mavericks aggressive defense held their ground after minimal yardage and forced the Eagles to punt the Eagles however went to their bag of tricks and successfully converted a fake punt with David Lopez completing a 14 yard pass to wide receiver Saul Peralez to pick up the first down to sustain the drive which the Eagles cashed in with a 29 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Allan Rodriguez to wide receiver Cgc Ritchie with just 13 seconds left before halftime. Erick Ramirez split the uprights with the point after to give the Eagles a 14 to 0 lead over the Mavericks heading into their respective halftime locker rooms.

At halftime the estimated frenzied 7800 fans that were in attendance at this game were treated to a magnificent performance from both the perennial Award winning Thundering Maverick Band as well as the perennial Award winning Mighty Eagle Band.

During that first half both the C.C. Winn Mavericks hard hitting defense and the Eagle Pass Eagles “Land Shark” defense more than held their own against each other as the Mavericks defense held the Eagles running game to 52 yards on 15 carries and the Eagles defense held the Mavericks ground attack to 50 yards rushing on 12 carries but both teams were greatly hampered by an abundance of costly penalties by the men in the zebra shirts with the Mavericks being penalized 5 times for 50 yards and the Eagles were penalized a whopping 10 times for 95 yards.

In the second half after an exchange of punts the Eagles orchestrated a well executed 65 yard scoring drive employing their diversified offensive scheme utilizing their short to intermediate passing game as well as their running game to maneuver down the field. The drive culminated with a 21 yard field goal of the foot of place kicker Erick Ramirez with 5:14 left in the third quarter to extend the Eagles lead to 17 to 0. Winn Mavericks to improve their overall season record to 2-1 while the Mavericks fall to 1-2 on the season. But one has to give credit where credit is due as the Eagles offense was able to find success via the airway and through the ground. Likewise the Eagles defense has to be commended by holding the usually potent Mavericks ground assault to limited yardage all game long.
