The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor inaugurated their 2019 Texas High School football season on Friday, August 30, 2019 when they entertained the Crystal City Javelinas in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in a game that designated as Parent’s night with the Mavericks players honoring their respective parent(s) during pregame festivities. This game marked the program’s 14th all-time season opener. The home standing Mavericks unleashed a very formidable running game while the stingy Mavericks nullified three separate potential scoring drives inside the red zone to come away with a dominating 30 to 0 victory over the Javelinas.

The Mavericks opened their scoring attack with a 68 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a one yard run to pay dirt by workhorse running back Ethan Cazares with 3:58 showing on the first quarter clock, Maverick’s sure footed placekicker Almikar Ramos split the uprights with the point after to give the Mavericks the early 7 to 0 lead in this game.

Early in the second quarter the Mavericks orchestrated a 53 yard scoring drive that culminated with a one yard keeper by quarterback Ethan Johnston with 9:13 remaining in the first half. Almikar Ramos tacked on the point after to extend the Mavericks lead to 14 to 0. The proud Mavericks added one more score with a well executed 76 yard touchdown pass from Ethan Johnston to wide receiver Ernesto Vasquez who hauled in a short pass reception in the left flat and simply outran the entire Javelinas defense down the left sideline on the way to the end zone with 4:15 left in the first half. The Mavericks two-point conversion failed but the Mavericks took the 20 to 0 lead into their halftime locker room.

In the third period the Mavericks mounted a 41 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a booming 32 yard field goal by Almikar Ramos with 3:47showing on the third quarter clock to pad the Mavericks lead to 23 to 0. The Mavericks then closed out the scoring for the night with a 46 yard scoring drive highlighted with a 36 yard pass reception from Ethan Johnston to Ernesto Vasquez all the way to the Javelinas one yard line. Ethan Cazares put the exclamation point in this contest with a one yard run to pay dirt with 4:11 left in the game. Almikar Ramos converted the point after to give the Mavericks a comfortable 30 to 0 lead over the Crystal City Javelinas.

The Mavericks offensive and defensive reserves got in some much needed playing time during the second half and they too managed to hold their own against the Javelinas. Ethan Cazares wound up as the game’s leading rusher with 135 yards on 15 carries a whopping 9.0 yards per carry and tallied two rushing touchdowns, Teammate Ernesto Vasquez ended up as the game’s leading receiver hauling in 3 pass receptions for 117 yards with one touchdown. But hats off go to the Mavericks big offensive line comprised by Jaime Rodriguez, Adrian Munoz, Daniel Ruiz Miguel Nino and Juan Guerra who dominated in the trenches with excellent blocking and pass protection all game long. Also to be highly commended were the Mavericks defensive front line and line backing corps comprised by Axel Rodriguez, Jose Hinojosa, Jose Anzures, Alejandro Ontiveros, Alex Chris Garcia, Jared Roiz as well as backup line backers Emanuel Oviedo and Michael Farris who each had one interception in this game.

The victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks will hit the road next Friday, September 9, 2019 for a trip to Uvalde, Texas to tangle with the Uvalde Coyotes in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter at the famed Honey Bowl. Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the mighty Mavericks on their dominating victory over the Crystal City Javelinas and invites the famed Maverick Nation as well as the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to make the trip to Uvalde, Texas next Friday and support the C.C. Winn Mavericks.
