San Antonio Classic Tourney

The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team mentored by head coach Reynol Mendoza coming off their grueling 1 to 0 extra inning loss at the hands of the Laredo United Longhorns in their district opener this past Tuesday night, hit the road on Thursday, March 7, 2019 for a trip to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the three-day high caliber San Antonio Baseball Classic Tournament. Although the Eagles managed to win one out of the five games they played in this tournament the good news was that nearly their entire pitching staff managed to get some valuable work on the mound as they continue to hone their skills for this coming Tuesday when they resume their respective district diamond battles.

GAME 1

In their opening match of the tourney the Eagles were pitted against the McAllen Bulldogs who are currently ranked 11th in the Texas Baseball Coaches Association Class 6A poll in a high noon encounter on Thursday. The Eagles scored first in this game with a lone run in the top of the third with Isaac Gonzalez drawing a one out walk, Braulio Rodriguez belted an RBI double to drive in Isaac Gonzalez.

The McAllen Bulldogs countered with a six run production in the bottom of the third on 5 hits, 2 errors, 2 wild pitches 1 walk and 1 hit batsman to take the lead for good in this game.

The Eagles answered with a lone run in the top of the fourth with Orly Garza and Roly Riza reaching on back to back hit by pitch, Edward Mendoza stroked an RBI double to drive in courtesy runner Matthew Elizondo. The Eagles then closed out the scoring in this game with another lone run in the top of the fifth with Braulio Rodriguez leading off the frame with a single, with two outs pinch hitter CJ Jimenez belted an RBI double to drive in pinch runner Matthew Elizondo as the Eagles fell by the final score of 6 to 3 with Edward Mendoza credited with the pitching loss.

GAME 2

In their second game of the San Antonio Classic Tournament the Eagles squared off against the Smithson Valley Rangers on Thursday night. Once again the Eagles managed to take the early lead with a lone run in the top half of the very first inning with Rey Rey Mendoza leading off the game with a solo homerun.

In the bottom of the first the Smithson Valley Rangers countered with a three run output on two hits one walk one hit batsman one stolen base and three passed balls to take a 3 to 1 lead over the Eagles. The Eagles could only manage to add one more run in the top of the fourth while the Smithson Valley Rangers extended their lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and another lone run in the bottom of the fifth to come away with the 5 to 2 victory over the Eagles. Eagles starting pitcher Sergio Lopez was credited with the pitching loss.

GAME 3

On Friday morning the Eagles resumed tournament action with a 10:00 am matchup against the Boerne Greyhounds. This game did not start out according to plan as the Greyhounds took the lead for good with a big7 run outburst in the top half of the first inning courtesy of five base hits, two walks, one hit batsman, two wild pitches, one sacrifice fly and one Eagle Pass error.

The Eagles answered with single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings respectively but in the top of the fourth the Greyhounds extended their lead with a four run production on three base hits, two walks and two Eagle Pass errors. The Eagles countered with one more lone run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth but it was not enough as the Eagles fell by the final score of 11 to 5. Eagles starting pitcher Eric Heredia was credited with the pitching loss with four complete innings of work and getting relief help from Dre Esquivel who tossed a scoreless top of the fifth

GAME 4

In their second game on Friday, the Eagles squared off against the defending UIL Class 6A Texas High School Baseball runner-up state champions the San Antonio Reagan Rattlers. The Eagles who were the designated visiting team broke into the scoring column with a pair of runs in the top of the first with Rey Rey Mendoza reaching on an error and came around to score on an RBI single by Braulio Rodriguez, with two outs Orly Garza reached on an error which enabled Braulio Rodriguez to score on the play but unfortunately that would prove to be the only damage the Eagles would produced in this game as they were handcuffed to only three base hits in this game

The Reagan Rattlers tied the ballgame at two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, then took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and sealed the game with a three run output in the bottom of the sixth to come away with the 7 to 2 victory over the Eagles. Roly Riza was charged with the pitching loss for the Eagles.

GAME 5

In their fifth and final game of the San Antonio Baseball Classic Tournament, the Eagles took the field to battle the Katy Seven Lakes Spartans in a 10:00 AM matchup where the Eagles managed to salvage one out of the five games they played in this tournament defeating the Katy Seven Lakes Spartans by the whopping final score of 16 to 7 with Jacob Ruiz credited with the pitching victory in relief of Eagles starting pitcher Mikey Perry.

The Eagles strapped on their hitting shoes in this game feasting on the Spartans pitching staff for a whopping total of 18 base hits spearheaded by CJ Jimenez who went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI’s as well as teammate Edward Mendoza who also went 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI’s as the Eagles came away with the 16 to 7 victory giving them an overall season record of 9 wins 8 losses with1 tie.

The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team will now regroup and get ready to resume their district diamond battles next Tuesday, March 12, 2019 when they host the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a 7:00 PM District 29-6A baseball encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Polo Moncada baseball field.
