The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity softball team under the leadership of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches, Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez Corina Escontrias and Fred Paniagua ventured to San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, February 21, 2019 to compete in the three-day Harlandale ISD Softball Invitational Tournament where they squared off against some quality competition which will greatly benefit the Lady Mavericks when they resume district action this coming week. The Lady Mavericks won four out of the five games they played at this tournament to come away with the Runner-up championship title and improved their overall season record to 10 wins with only 3 losses.

GAME 1

In their opening match of pool play, the mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks continued to display a torrid hitting assault against the San Antonio Jefferson Lady Mustangs spearheaded by their power hitting catcher Briana Soto who had a perfect day at the plate going 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s, teammates Ana Lopez, Kayla Sifuentes and Martha Garcia each contributed two hits apiece in this game in support of starting and winning pitcher Amy Flores who did an amicable job inside the circle. The powerful Lady Mavericks who play the way it is supposed to be played with smart coaching and by manufacturing runs any way they can through well placed bunts, slap bunts, drag bunts, steals, hit and run plays as well as with powerful contact swings erupted with a huge 9 run production in the top half of the second inning and never looked back as they beat the Lady Mustangs by the final score of 14 to 6.

Winning Pitcher: Amy Flores Leading Hitters: Briana Soto 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s, Ana Lopez 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Kayla Sifuentes 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI, Martha Garcia 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI, Ariana Soto 1 for 4 with 1 run scored, Ariana Benavidez 2 runs scored, Thiana Reyes 1 run scored, and Amy Flores 1 run scored.

GAME 2

In their second game of pool play on Thursday the Lady Mavericks supported by the famed Maverick Nation in attendance were pitted against the always tough Poteet Lady Aggies with Ariana Soto drawing the starting pitching job. The Lady Mavericks built up a big 7 to 1 lead after just three innings of play with nearly everyone in the staring lineup contributing a base hit in this game but then managed to hang on to prevail by the final score of 7 to 5 over the Lady Aggies. Winning pitcher Ariana Soto only allowed four hits in this contest.

GAME 3

On Friday the Lady Mavericks resumed pool play with a matchup against the tournament’s co-host the McCollum Cowgirls in what proved to be quite a nail biter. Trailing 1 to 0 after the top half of the first inning the proud Lady Mavericks stormed back in the bottom half of the first with a two run production courtesy of starting and eventual game winning pitcher Ariana Soto helped out her own cause with a huge two run homerun over the left field fence scoring Kayla Sifuentes ahead of her who had stroked a one out single.

Poteet tied the game with a lone run in the top of the second inning but the Lady Mavericks broke the two all tied with a big four run output in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good with Briana Soto, Mia Uriegas, Thalia Reyes and Ana Lopez scoring a run apiece in that frame.

Poteet countered with a three run rally in the top of the fourth but the rally fell one run short as the Lady Mavericks came away with the well earned 6 to 5 victory. Defensively the Lady Mavericks were flawless with no errors

GAME 4

The fourth and final game of pool play saw the Lady Mavericks hook up with the tournament’s co-host the Harlandale squad. Once again the potent Lady Mavericks lineup showcased their offensive production with a pair of runs in the top half of the first inning with the key blow being provided by catcher Briana Soto who blasted a two RBI double to bring home Kayla Sifuentes as well as her twin sister Ariana Soto who had reached on an error and a walk respectively. The Lady Mavericks extended their lead with three runs in the top of the second and a pair of runs in the top of the third to take a 7 to 0 lead.

Harlandale answered with four runs in the bottom of the third but it was not enough as the Lady Mavericks remained unbeaten with the 7 to 4 victory over Harlandale with starting pitcher Angie Escamilla earning the pitching victory. Kayla Sifuentes and Martha Garcia led the offensive production with two hits apiece and once again the Lady Mavericks committed no errors out on the field. The victory propelled the Lady Mavericks to the tournament’s championship game on Saturday.

GAME 5

Saturday’s championship game pitted the Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks against the Boerne Lady Hounds in a high noon encounter at the Frank Tejeda sports complex. The perennially high powered Boerne Lady Hounds erupted with a huge nine run production in the bottom of the first and never looked back. The Lady Hounds then managed to tack on a pair of runs in the second and added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 14 to9 lead over the Lady Mavericks.

The valiant young Lady Mavericks would counter with a three run output in the top half of the fifth to avert being shutout with Ana Lopez leading off the frame with a solid single and promptly stole second, Martha Garcia blasted a two out RBI triple to bring home Ana Lopez, Ariana Soto reached on an error which enabled Martha Garcia to race home safely on the play, Briana Soto followed with a ringing RBI double to drive in Ariana Soto but that would prove to be all the damage the Lady Mavericks would muster as they fell by the final score of 14 to 3 but came away with the tournament’s runner-up championship plaque.
