The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ basketball squad under the guidance of head coach Fred Paniagua and assistant coaches J.J. Iracheta, Jr,, Roberto Hoffman and Tonya Rosas continued the District 28-5A hard court battles on Friday, January 18, 2019 when they entertained the always tough Somerset Lady Bulldogs in a 6:30 PM hoops matchup at the C.C. Winn High School gym.

The home standing Lady Mavericks and visiting Lady Bulldogs hooked into quite a duel in the opening period with the lead exchanging hands back and before the proud Lady Mavericks managed to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 14 to 12 in that period to take the early lead in this game.

In the second period the Lady Mavericks picked up the tempo with their offensive attack getting scoring production from Ashley Cruz, Destiny Sukue and Aislee Salazar who tallied points on fast break layups, short range jumpers as well as with a few shots from beyond the three-point arc to increase their lead to 34 to 23 heading into the halftime break.

During the halftime break Coach Fred Paniagua gathered around with his coaching staff and implement a few adjustments both offensively and defensively but the Lady Mavericks came out a little cold in the third period which enabled Somerset to narrow their deficit somewhat by outscoring the Lady Mavericks 11 to 7 in the third period heading into the fourth and final period of play.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Mavericks came out with a mission and poured on the scoring production while on the defensive side the Mavericks were in a stealing mode as they recorded 16 steals in this game which led to positive points enabling the Lady Mavericks to come away with a well earned 56 to 42 victory over the Somerset Lady Bulldogs to improve their district record to 5-6.

Standout Lady Maverick Ashley Cruz recorded a rare triple-double in this game leading the team with a game high17 points, a game high 10 rebounds and a game high whopping 10 steals. Destiny Sukue also scored in double figures with `13 points and Aislee Salazar contributed 11 points to the cause. Way to Go Lady Mavericks!
