The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys’ basketball team mentored by head coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Julio Cumpian. Patrick Sanchez and Eric Ramos continued their respective district hoops hard court battles on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 with a road trip to Floresville, Texas to tangle with the Floresville Tigers in a 6:30 PM District 28-5A hoops encounter. The visiting Mavericks ran into a red hot shooting home squad that managed to tally in double digits in every quarter to come away with the 79 to 36 victory over a valiant Mavericks squad.

The following report courtesy of head coach Paulo Valero:

Floresville opened up the game on an 11 to 0 run. After two timeouts we were able to settle down. This was really frustrating because everything we covered in practice Floresville was running we were defending it good they were just hitting tough contested shots over us.

Floresville’s size and height physically took its toll on us. Our boys fought hard and made several runs in the first half but they just ran out of gas by the end of third quarter.

Floresville has a 6’ 5: kid down in the block who dominated the paint with 32 points mostly on misses (offensive rebounds). They have a 6’ 4” lanky post that ran the offense through and finally they have a 6’ 1” point guard with the length to take NBA 3’s. Although we went down by double digits early we hung around and kept it between 6-10 points for the entire first half until the final minute when they took a 14 point lead into the half.

Coming out of the half they went on a 6-0 run to take a 20 point lead to start the 3rd quarter. Our boys once again fought hard and dropped it down to 14 but Floresville was able to pull away to end the 3rd. In the 4th quarter they shot everything inside and although we tried provided different looks the results ended up the same for them. The game was very physical and our boys fought hard but ultimately came up short.
