The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity boys’ basketball squad mentored by head basketball coach Paulo Valero and assistant coaches Julio Cumpian, Patrick Sanchez and Eric Ramos ventured to Poteet, Texas on Thursday, December 6, 2018 to compete in the Annual Poteet Strawberry Classic Basketball Tournament where they faced off against some tough quality opponents managing to win one out of their five matches at the tournament but gained invaluable playing experience that will greatly benefit them for their upcoming District 28-5A hoops opener scheduled for this coming Friday, December 14, 2018 where they will entertain the Somerset Bulldogs in a district opening match with tipoff time scheduled for 6:30 PM at the EPISD Student SAC Arena.

The following report provided by head coach Paulo Valero:

The process went on the road this weekend as the Winn Mavericks played in the annual Poteet Strawberry Classic. The Mavericks went to the tournament to pick up experience and some wins to give them some confidence for their district opener.

GAME 1

The first game in pool play was against San Antonio private school Holy Cross. Both teams started off cold but Holy Cross was able to use their half court 1-3-1 to slow down the Mavericks. Bothe teams played suffocating defense but at the end of the day Holy Cross was able to outscore the Mavericks by 5. Moe Gaytan was the only player in double digits for the Mavericks as he was able to score 14 points. The Mavericks fell short in this one 29-34.

Our boys in black were able to fight back to hold onto a late 5 point lead. Unfortunately foul trouble sat both leading scorers Jairo Maldonado and Moe Gaytan which is when Crystal City took advantage and were able to secure a 5 point victory after a huge no-call which should have been a charge by Eduardo Nava. Jairo Maldonado led the team in scoring with 23 points including 6 from downtown while Moe Gaytan pitched with 16, Eric Sanchez with 6 and Diego Rodriguez with 8.
