The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Tom Gonzalez hit the road on Friday, October 12, 2018 journeying to Laredo, Texas to battle against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs in a key 7:30 PM District 29-6A gridiron matchup at venerable Shirley Field. The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles entered this contest sporting an overall season record of 5-1 and a district mark of 1-1. The home standing Laredo Nixon Mustangs ventured in with an overall season mark of 4-2 and a district record of 0-2.

The high soaring Eagle Pass Eagles did not take long to showcase both their potent offense as well as their very fast, aggressive and hard hitting defense in this game. The Eagles offense struck first in this game with a well balanced offensive scheme both through their patented running game and equally as good aerial game with a 7 play 61 yard scoring drive capped off by their talented young freshman running with a 31 yard sprint into the end zone with 9:04 showing on the first quarter clock. Erick Ramirez tacked on the point after attempt to give the Eagles the early7 to 0 lead over the Mustangs and gave the Loyal Legion of Eagles faithful in attendance a sneak peek of coming attractions.

The home standing Mustangs countered with what prove to be their only damage they would muster this night against the stingy Eagle Pass starting defense that features a powerful and relentless defensive line the likes of Manny Rodriguez, David Santos, standout Moises Rocha and young Charlie Schuessler along with a trio of truly solid and hard tackling trio of line backers the like of stellar David Kypuros, Jacob Salinas and veteran Roger Ulloa as well as a swift ball hawing secondary unit of Raul Lechler, Nico Moyeda, Josh Moncivais, Ryan Chisum and Eric Heredia who allowed only a 35 yard Field Goal by Mustangs placekicker Kluivert Flores with 3:25 left in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter of this game the Eagle Pass Eagles erupted with a huge 34 point production greatly aided by the Eagles defense who caused a total of four turnover in this game with a pair of interceptions one each by Ryan Chisum and Josh Monsivais along and two fumble recoveries one each by David Kypuros and Ryan Chisum to set up the Eagles offense with excellent field possession. The Eagles increased their 7 to 3 lead with a three play 17 yard scoring drive culminating with an 11 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to wide receiver Rey Rey Mendoza with 11:55 left in the second quarter. Erick Ramirez split the uprights with the point after to give the Eagle a 14 to 3 lead in this game.

The Eagles next scoring drive saw them continue to utilize their running and passing game against the Mustangs that resulted in a four play 31 yard scoring drive capped off with a 7 yard scamper into the end zone by freshman running back Jose Hernandez with 10:16 remaining in the second quarter. Erick Ramirez added the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 21 to 3.

The Eagles then proceeded to mount and impressive six play 84 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a 10 yard keeper by quarterback Richie Luna with 3:53 left before halftime. Erick Ramirez remained perfect in the point after department to increase the Eagles lead to 28 to 3.

But the highlights were just getting started as the Eagles defense accounted for the next score of the night as they literally took matters into their own hands when standout linebacker David Kypuros simply stripped the ball away from the Mustangs running back and rambled 65 yards untouched into the end zone with 1:44 left before halftime. The point after attempt failed but the Eagles now enjoyed a comfortable 34 to 3 lead. But the first half scoring production was not quite finished yet.

After the ensuing kickoff the Eagles stingy defense once again caused a turnover giving the Eagles excellent field possession at the Laredo Nixon 20 yard line which the Eagle defense quickly cashed in with a 17 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to Rey Rey Mendoza with just 41 seconds left in the first half. Erick Ramirez added the point after giving the Eagles an insurmountable 41 to 3 lead heading into their halftime locker room.

The only change and adjustment made by the Eagles coaching staff during the halftime break was the Eagles’ offensive and defensive reserves would play in the second half of this gridiron encounter and they too managed to get into the scoring column with a six play 63 yard scoring drive culminating with a two yard blast to pay dirt by Eagles running back J Herrera with 1:54 left in the third quarter. Erick Ramirez closed out the scoring for the Eagles with his extra point conversion giving the Eagles a 48 to 3 lead over the Laredo Nixon Mustangs who managed to finally tally a touchdown midway through the fourth and final quarter when Mustangs running back Dennis Calloway tallied from one yard out with 5L34 left in the game. Kluivert Flores added the point after to close out the scoring for the night as the mighty Eagle Pass Eagle came away with the impressive 49 to 10 victory over the Laredo Nixon Mustangs to improve their overall season record to 6-1 and their district mark to 2-1.

The victorious Eagle will now get set to host the Laredo United South Panthers next Friday night October 19, 2019 with a key 7:30 PM District 29-6A gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
