The Eagle Pass Eagles guided by head football coach Tom Gonzalez hosted the Laredo LBJ Wolves on Friday, October 5, 2018 in a 7:30 PM District 29-6A gridiron matchup at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. The visiting Laredo LBJ Wolves entered this contest with an overall season record of 1-4 and a district mark of 0-1 while the home standing Eagle Pass Eagles came in with an overall season record of 4-1 and a district mark of 0-1.

The Eagles aerial assault proved to be too much to handle for the Laredo LBJ Wolves as the Eagles even their district record at 1-1 with a sound 28 to 0 victory over the Laredo LBJ Wolves. The quick pursuing hard hitting Eagles “Land Sharks” defense held Laredo LBJ to a measly 8 total yards rushing on 26 carries. Eagles quarterback Richie Luna threw three touchdown passes and had nearly 300 yards passing in this game.

After an exchange of punts on the Wolves and Eagles respective first series of downs, the Eagle Pass War Eagle” offense began to crank up their ground and aerial attack upon the LBJ Wolves defense as they mounted a 76 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 30 yard swing pass from quarterback Richie Luna to young freshman tailback Jose Hernandez who tight roped down the left sideline all the way to pay dirt with 3:51 showing on the first quarter clock. Eagles left footed place kicker Erick Ramirez tacked on the point after to give the Eagles the early 7 to 0 lead in this game.

In the Eagles next offensive series the Eagles utilized their passing game to maneuver down the field as they orchestrated an impressive 80 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 26 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Richie Luna to wide receiver Oscar Castillon with 7:19 left before halftime. Erick Ramirez converted the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 14 to 0 over the Laredo LBJ Wolves.

Meanwhile the Eagles stellar defensive crew featuring the relentless pass rush from standout Moises Rocha, Manny Rodriguez, Jorge Gonzalez and the quick pursuing line backing trio of Roger Ulloa, David Kypuros and Jacob Salinas as well as the suffocating pass coverage and run support from the Eagles talented secondary unit the likes of Eric Heredia, Nico Moyeda, Ryan Chisum, Josh Monsivais and Raul Lechler played a near flawless first half allowing just 19 yards rushing and 19 yards passing in that first half.

Late in the first half the Eagles came within an eyelash of adding another score when standout linebacker David Kypuros laid a big hit on the LBJ Wolves ball carrier causing him to cough up the pigskin and safety Ryan Chisum made a shoestring fumble recovery and broke several tackles before being barely brought down by the last man standing on his way to the end zone but the Eagles managed to hold on to their 14 to 0 lead over the Wolves heading to their halftime break.

The Eagles received the second half kickoff and quickly struck with a six play 57 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a 42 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to young sophomore wide receiver Jacob Ruiz who put on some shifty moves on his way to pay dirt with 9:55 showing on the third quarter clock. Erick Ramirez split the uprights with the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 21 to 0. Eagles’ receiver Jacob Ruiz would wind up the night as the game’s leading receiver with 5 receptions for 101 yards and one touchdown catch.
