The C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football team mentored by head coach Eric Villasenor culminated their 2018 non-district portion of their schedule on Friday, September 21, 2018 when they boarded their charter busses and ventured to Pearsall, Texas to tangle with the Pearsall Mavericks in a 7:30PM non-district gridiron matchup. The visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks currently ranked 9th in Region IV Class 5A by Athletics Department.com came in sporting an overall season record of 2-1 while the home standing Pearsall Mavericks ventured into this contest with an overall season record of 1-1. The Pride of Southern Maverick County the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks dominated this game both offensively and defensively to improve their overall season record to 3-1 by coming away victorious over the Pearsall Mavericks by the final score of 21 to 0.

For all of the defensive indeed fans out there this matchup was right up your alley as both teams were quite stingy in allowing hardly any positive yardage all game long but the C.C. Winn Mavericks’ famed aggressive quick pursuing and hard hitting defensive unit had the better performance as the shutout the Pearsall Mavericks and forced a total of five turnovers with a pair of interceptions and three fumble recoveries in this game.

It was the C.C. Winn Mavericks’ defense that accounted for the score of this game when they forced the Pearsall Mavericks to cough up the pigskin which standout defensive end Ricardo Morales scooped up and rambled 30 yards into the end zone midway through the opening quarter. Ernesto Fuentes tacked on the point after to give the C.C. Winn Mavericks an early 7 to 0 lead.

In the second quarter the C.C. Winn Mavericks’ offense under the leadership of offensive coordinator Heriberto Roiz began to find success with a well balanced offensive scheme mixing the patented ground game along with their short passing game mounting a 53 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a five yard scamper to pay dirt by running back Fernando Zapata. Quarterback Ethan Johnston added a two-point conversion run to give the C.C. Winn Mavericks a 15 to 0 lead.

Right before the end of the first half of play the C.C. Winn Mavericks’ offense mounted another scoring drive utilizing the passing game spreading the wealth amongst the entire receiving corps of Jared Roiz, Raul Solis, Jose Blanco and Ernesto Vasquez to matriculate down into Pearsall territory with the scoring drive culminating with a perfectly thrown 30 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Johnston to wide receiver Jose Blanco. The point after attempt was no good but the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks enjoyed a 21 to 0 lead over the Pearsall Mavericks.

Although neither team managed to score in the second half of this game the highlight of this non-district gridiron finale has to be the magnificent job turned in by the entire C.C. Winn Mavericks’ defensive unit under the tutelage of co-defensive coordinators Rene Ramirez and Saul Salas who applied relentless pressure from their aggressive defensive line who caused a total of four fumbles and recovered three of them on the night which enabled their line backing duo of Patricio Hernandez and Alex Chris Garcia to have a field day racking up a whopping combined 34 tackles with two quarterback sacks between them. The equally stingy C.C. Winn Mavericks’ secondary unit of Azael Rodriguez, Hector Nunez, German Velasquez, Domingo Duran and Gilberto Vasquez only allowed five completions out of 17 pass attempts for minimal yardage and also intercepted a pair of pass attempts to seal the victory for the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks

The victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks now set their sights towards next week’s game when they will open their respective quest to capture the District 14-5A Division I championship crown when they host the always tough Laredo Martin Tigers on Friday, September 28, 2018 in a 7:30 PM district opening gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium This marquee matchup has all the makings of being quite a physical, hotly contested and hard hitting matchup.

Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the entire Mavericks Nation as well as the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium this coming Friday, September 28, 2018 and support the mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks in their game against the Laredo Martin Tigers. GO MAVERICKS! BEAT THE TIGERS!
