The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team mentored by head football coach Tom Gonzalez will conclude their 2018 non-district portion of their schedule by hosting the San Antonio, McCollum Cowboys in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. This game is designated as Parent’s Night with the Eagles players paying tribute to their respective parent’s during pre-game festivities. With 9:06 remaining before halftime the game was delayed by lightning in the area. After two 30 minute delays the rest of the game was cancelled by mutual agreement of both head coaches. Since this was a non-district game the rest of this contest does not have to resume therefore the Eagles improve their overall season record to 4-0.

The home standing Eagle Pass Eagles won the opening coin flip but decided to defer their option to the second half so the visiting McCollum Cowboys took possession of their first offensive series from their own 31 yard line and proceeded to march down to the Eagle Pass 34 yard line utilizing the running of their shifty tailback Scott Mc Alexander and their short passing game from quarterback Ryan Ramirez who also completed a 36 yard pass to wide receiver Eric Laija but the stingy Eagle Pass defense showcased the talent immediately and forced the Cowboys to turn the ball over on downs.

The Eagle Pass offense took over and quickly unleashed a powerful ground attack featuring tailback Saul Peralez who did most of the work in their 7 play 66 yard scoring drive but it was freshman running back Jose Hernandez who cashed in with a one yard blast into the end zone with 9:33 showing on the first quarter clock. Placekicker David Lopez tacked on the point after to give the Eagles the early 7 to 0 lead. Saul Peralez would wind up as the game’s leading rusher with 115 yards rushing on only 10 carries in less than one and a half quarters of play.

After the ensuing kickoff the McCollum Cowboys once again drove down to near the red zone but the Eagles fast hard hitting defense led by standout defensive end Moises Rocha and stellar linebacker David Kypuros stood their ground and once again forced the Cowboys to turn the ball over on downs at the Eagle Pass 23 yard line.

The potent Eagles offense took over but could only manage to drive down to midfield where they were forced to punt on fourth down. McCollum was able to gain six yards during that offensive series and were forced to punt the ball back to the Eagles.

The Eagles offense who was just starting to crank up their offensive machine responded with a well orchestrated 63 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a perfectly placed 26 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Richie Luna to his tall wide receiver Rey Rey Mendoza with only 55 seconds left in the first quarter of play.

The Eagles tough and aggressive “Land Sharks” defense continued to put on their patented relentless pressure and forced the Cowboys to punt the ball over in their next possession and the came up with a brilliant interception on their next offensive series by defensive back Nico Moyeda to set up the next score of the game. The Eagles defense only gave up 83 yards of total offense in this game.

The Eagle Pass Eagles brought the Loyal Legion of Eagles faithful in attendance to a rousing standing ovation with a well manufacture 65 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 46 yard touchdown pass from Richie Luna to wide receiver David Lopez who put on some nifty moves on the play to get by the entire McCollum secondary on his way to pay dirt with 9:06 remaining before halftime. Eagles sure footed placekicker David Lopez remains perfect on the point after department to give the Eagles a 21to 0 lead over the Cowboys.

At this point the game officials decided to halt the game due to lightning in the near vicinity of the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. After over an hour delay by mutual agreement by both head football coaches the rest of this non-district encounter was cancelled thus the Eagle Pass Eagles come away with the 21 to 0 victory over the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys to improve their overall season record to a perfect 4-0 mark.
