The mighty C.C. Winn Mavericks’ varsity football squad under the leadership of head football coach Eric Villasenor returned home on Friday, September 7, 2018 to entertain the Uvalde Coyotes in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron season home opener at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. This contest was designated as Parent’s night with the Mavericks varsity players honoring their respective parents during pre-game festivities. The home standing Mavericks take a last second thriller over the Uvalde Coyotes in a game that went down to the wire by the final score of 21 to 20. The Mavericks thus improve their overall season record to 2-0.

The home standing Mavericks took the opening kickoff and commenced their first offensive series of the night from the Mavericks own 30 yard line, After a few successful short gains the drive stalled at the Uvalde Coyotes 47yard line where the Mavericks were first to punt but low and behold the Mavericks ran a fake punt play that unfortunately fell short but the perennially hard hitting Mavericks stingy defense rose to the occasion and forced the Coyotes to turn the ball over on downs at the Mavericks 21 yard line.

In their second offensive series the Mavericks patented ground game and short passing game drove to around midfield but a couple of the abundant penalties that were called on both teams during the entire game pushed the ball back to around the Mavericks 40 yard line where after a short gain on a keeper by Mavs quarterback Ethan Johnston he attempted to pitch the ball back to the running back but Uvalde linebacker Andrew Thompson was Johnny on the Spot as he picked off the attempted pitch back in midair and rambled 42 yards untouched with the interception for a Coyotes touchdown with 8:15 showing on the first quarter clock. Coyotes’ placekicker Matthew Avila tacked on the point after to give the Coyotes the early 7 to 0 lead over the Mavericks.

The proud C.C. Winn Mavericks supported by a near capacity Mavericks Nation in attendance countered right back with a well executed 48 yard scoring drive capped off with a one yard run to pay dirt by tailback Marc Cardenas with 10:50 left in the second period. The Mavericks always innovative offensive brain trust successfully converted a two-point swinging gate conversion pass from extra point holder Jared Roiz to wide receiver Jose Blanco to take an 8 to7 lead over the Coyotes.

The visiting Coyotes with their super up tempo and relentless passing attack continued to flood the airway managing to orchestrate an 80 yard scoring drive culminating with a 39 yard touchdown pass from young quarterback Donovan Davila to his primary target wide receiver D’Andre Carroll who leaped over the Mavericks defender who looked like he had a sure interception well within his hands but the athletic Coyotes receiver managed to tip the ball into his own hands to waltz into the end zone with 6:26 showing on the second quarter clock. Matthew Avila converted the point after to give the Coyotes a 12 to 8 lead over the Mavericks.

Late in the first half of play the Coyotes had an excellent opportunity to increase their lead when they drove down to the C.C. Winn Mavericks two yard line where the Mavericks stout defensive unit featuring Ricardo Morales, Alexis Ontiveros, Guillermo Beltran Patricio Hernandez, Alex Chris Garcia as well as the veteran hard hitting defensive secondary unit of German Velasquez, Domingo Duran, Hector Nunez, Azael Rodriguez and Gilberto Vasquez met the threat head on and caused the Coyotes to fumble and the Mavericks recovered the errant pigskin to avert disaster as the clock wound down to end the first half with the Uvalde Coyotes holding a 14 to 8 lead over the Mavericks.

During the halftime break the wise always thinking young Mavericks head football coach Eric Villasenor met with his offensive coordinator, co-defensive coordinators as well as with his co-special teams coordinators to go over the first half of play and together they made the necessary adjustments that needed to be done and also implemented a few plays and wrinkles that they would use in the second half of this game.

The second half saw the Coyotes receive the second half kickoff but once again the Mavericks defense held their ground and forced the Coyotes to turn the ball over on downs at the Mavericks own 37 yard line where the Mavericks offense took over and immediately implanted the changes made at halftime manufacturing a 14 play scoring drive that was capped off with a one yard sneak into the end zone by quarterback Ethan Johnston who used the power blocking of the Mavericks true unsung heroes the massive offensive line with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter. Mavericks’ placekicker Ernesto Fuentes split the uprights with the point after to give the Mavericks a 15 to 14 lead over the Coyotes.

After the ensuing kickoff disaster struck the Coyotes once again as the coughed up the pigskin which the Mavericks defense recovered at the Uvalde 21 yard line where the Mavericks offense quickly capitalized on with their power running game but the drive concluded with a 6 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Johnston to wide receiver Jose Blanco who made a sensation shoe string catch in the end zone with 11:11 left in the fourth quarter.

The majority of the remainder of the fourth quarter was like a championship Chess match with both head coaches matching wits against each other with the Coyotes continuing their all out air assault and the Mavericks showcasing their famed ball control time consuming running game.

To their credit the Uvalde Coyotes mounted a last minute 80 yard scoring drive after a Mavericks failed field goal attempt. The Coyotes potential game tying scoring drive was capped off with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Donovan Davila to wide receiver Marcus De La Cruz with only 29 seconds left in the game. But to everyone’s surprise instead of kicking the game tying extra point and head into overtime the Coyotes went for the win instead but their potential game winning two-point pass attempt fell harmlessly incomplete out of the end zone to enable the Mavericks to remain unbeaten with the truly hard fought and well earned 21 to 20 victory over the Uvalde Coyotes.

The victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks now set their sights to next week’s game where they will host none other than their cross town counterpart the Eagle Pass Eagles in the 13th Annual gridiron match-up on Friday, September 14, 2018 with kickoff time for this non-district encounter scheduled for 7:30 PM at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium where a sellout standing room only crowd is expected to attend this upcoming game.
