The mighty Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team under the tutelage of head football coach Tom Gonzalez ventured out of town for the second consecutive week on Friday, September 7, 2018 with a road trip to San Antonio, Texas to battle with the Southwest Dragons in a 7:30 PM non-district gridiron encounter between last year’s Co-District 29-6A champions. This season the Southwest Dragons have been realigned to compete in District 14-5A Division I. Both the Eagles and Dragons entered this contest with identical 1-0 overall season records. Due to the unplayable conditions at Dragons Stadium this game was moved to the brand new San Antonio Southwest Legacy Titans stadium. The Eagles Pass Eagles were able to take a truly hard fought battle over the Southwest Dragons by the final score of 16 to 14.

The Marquee matchup for this contest really lived up to the hype as the limelight would be on how well the Dragons powerful running game would do against the Eagles fast stout and hard hitting defensive unit. Early on in this contest the Eagles defense met the challenge head on holding their own against the Dragons who finally late in the opening period managed to mount an 8 play scoring drive capped off with a 3 yard run to pay dirt by their tailback Will Herrera with only 1:35 left in the first quarter. Dragons’ placekicker Oscar Jimenez tacked on the point after to give the Dragons a 7 to 0 lead over the Eagles.

Early in the second quarter the proud Eagle Pass Eagles supported by their Loyal Legion of Faithful that made the trip to this game countered with a game tying 9 play 71 yard scoring drive mixing the running game with their short passing game to matriculate down the field culminating the drive with a 5 yard run into the end zone by running back Saul Peralez with 10:43 showing on the second quarter clock, David Lope split the uprights with the point after to knot up the score at 7 points apiece. Neither team managed to dent the scoreboard the rest of the first half so the game remained tied at 7 heading to their respective halftime locker room.

At the halftime break the experienced Eagles head football coach Tom Gonzalez gathered his respective offensive coordinators and went over what worked in the first half and went over some minor adjustments to be implemented in the second half of this contest.

Midway through the third quarter of play the mighty Eagles unleashed a relentless offensive attack to mount a 7 play 60 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a 4 yard TD run by freshman running back Jose Hernandez with 4:10 left in the third quarter. David Lopez successfully added the point after to give the Eagles a 14 to 7 lead over the stunned home standing Dragons.

Meanwhile the Eagles stingy defensive crew of David Santos, Manny Rodriguez stellar defensive lineman Moises Rocha, standout linebacker David Kypuros and fellow linebackers Jacob Salinas and Roger Ulloa along with the swift blanket covering secondary unit of Eric Heredia, Nico Moyeda, Ryan Chisum and Raul Lechler showcased their talent against the Dragons the rest of the way.

Early in the fourth and final quarter of play the Dragons had possession at the own 19yard line but the aggressive Eagle defense sacked the quarter back and tackled the ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage forcing the Dragons to punt the ball over to the Eagles from their own yard line when disaster struck as the Dragons deep snapper snap the ball way over the punter’s head and out of the end zone for a safety increasing the Eagles lead to 16 to 7 over the Dragons. Unbeknownst to all in attendance that safety would prove to be quite vital in the end.

To their credit the Southwest Dragons did not give up without a fight mounting a long 10 lay 85 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a yard run into the end zone by tailback Will Herrera with 5:19 left in the game Placekicker J.P. Flores split the uprights with the point after but that would prove to be the final points of this game as the Eagles improve their overall season record to 2-0 with the tough victory over the Dragons by the final score of 16 to14 much to the delight of the Loyal Legion of Eagles fans in attendance.

.

The victorious Eagle Pass Eagles will now focus to next week’s game where they will tangle with none other than their cross town counterpart the C.C. Winn Mavericks in the 13th Annual gridiron match-up on Friday, September 14, 2018 with kickoff time for this non-district encounter scheduled for 7:30 PM at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium where a sellout standing room only crowd is expected to attend this upcoming game.
