The defending District 29-6A co-champion Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football squad under the tutelage of head football coach Tom Gonzalez ventured to the greater San Antonio area to give their Loyal Legion of fans a first glimpse of coming attractions by kicking-off their respective first controlled scrimmage of the 2018 season with a 7:00 pm season with a 7:00 pm matchup against the Somerset Bulldogs.

In the controlled portion of this scrimmage the Eagles and Bulldogs hooked up in three sessions of 10 and 10 plays. After a scoreless first session the Eagles tallied one touchdown in the second session that was set up with the pass-catch combo of quarterback Richie Luna and wide receiver Rey Rey Mendoza to drive down deep into Somerset territory and then combined the skills to tally the first score with a four yard TD pass. The third 10 and 10 session also went scoreless. After a short break both teams returned to the gridiron with a 16 minute live action with a running clock.

During the live action period the Eagles offense erupted with four quite impressive scoring drives with quarterback Richie Luna spearheading the aerial assault utilizing the services of his receiving corps of Rey Rey Mendoza who had a big night hauling in six catches for over 110 yards with a pair of TD receptions as well as Eric Jimenez and Oscar Castillon, Luna and Mendoza hooked up with a 50 yard pass reception to set up their next score with running back Saul Perales capping off the drive with a two yard TD run.

Saul Perales also tallied the next score for the Eagles with a one yard plunge to pay dirt. The potent Eagles offense quickly struck again with a long scoring drive culminating with a 10 yard TD pass from Richie Luna to Rey Rey Mendoza. The final score of the night came with a 25yard TD pass from Richie Luna to slot receiver Alan Rodriguez to give the Eagles the dominating 35 to 0 victory over the home standing Somerset Bulldogs.

The famed Eagles defense played lights out with their superior speed and relentless aggressive style of play from standout Moy Rocha and David Santos controlling the defensive line and supported by their hard hitting linebackers Roger Ulloa and Nico Moyeda. The Eagles stellar secondary unit who is predicted to be one of the very best not only in District 29-6A but in the entire Region IV showcased their overall talent with great coverage against the Bulldogs receivers with the likes of Eric Heredia, Raul Lechler and Ryan Chisum

The Eagles will return to the gridiron on Thursday, August 23, 2018 where they will host the District 14-5A Laredo Martin Tigers who mentored by former C.C. Winn Mavericks head coach David Charles in a 7:00 pm second and final scrimmage at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. Eagle Pass Sports Central invites the entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas to come out to the stadium Thursday night and support the mighty Eagle Pass Eagles..
