The playoff bound Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball squad under the guidance of head coach Reynol Mendoza and assistant coaches Henry Silva and Chris Villa ventured to Laredo, Texas on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 to battle against the Laredo United Longhorns in a key District 29-6A baseball diamond encounter at venerable Krueger Field. The visiting Eagle Pass Eagles came into this matchup currently in second place in the district race with a record of 8-3 while the home standing Longhorns entered in a tie for third place in district play with a record of 7-4.

The Eagle Pass Eagles wasted no time in taking the lead in this game with Dee Andre Torres belting a one out double and promptly stealing third, Braulio Rodriguez laid down a well executed sacrifice bunt to bring home Dee Andre Torres to give the Eagles the early 1 to 0 lead in this game.

In the top of the second the Eagles extended their lead with a three run production with Derek Ibarra reaching on a fielder’s choice with courtesy runner Kristian Barcena running for catcher Christian Del Bosque who had reached on an error being forced out at second on the play, with two outs starting pitcher Eric Heredia helped out his own cause with an RBI single to drive in Derek Ibarra, Isaac Gonzalez followed with a single, Rey Rey Mendoza came through with an RBI single to bring home courtesy runner Richie Luna, Dee Andre Torres connected with an RBI single of his own to deliver Isaac Gonzalez home to give the Eagles a 4 to 0 lead over the Longhorns.

The Longhorns answered with a lone run in the bottom of the second on a walk and error and a sacrifice fly. But the Eagles continued to feast on the Longhorns pitching staff in the top of the third with a two run output with Dee Andre Torres stroking a single to lead off the frame, Isaac Roque drew a walk, Christian Del Bosque was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dee Andre Torres then came home courtesy of a wild pitch, Derek Ibarra followed with an RBI single to bring home Isaac Roque to give the Eagles a 6 to 1lead over the Longhorns.

In the top of the fourth inning the Eagles tacked on another lone run with Rey Rey Mendoza blasting a triple to lead off the frame, with two outs Isaac Roque came through with an RBI single to drive in Rey Rey Mendoza. In the bottom of the fourth the Longhorns narrowed their deficit with a pair of runs and then tacked on a lone run in the bottom of the fifth but that would prove to be all of the damage they would muster in this game.

For good measure the Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to give the Eagles the well earned 8 to 4 victory over the Laredo United Longhorns to remain in sole possession of second place in the race for the district title. Eagles’ starting hurler Eric Heredia who is quickly working his way in becoming the Eagles #2 man in the starting rotation earned the pitching victory hurling a solid four complete innings or work on the mound allowing three runs on only one base hit and walked three batters, Eagles relief man Edward Mendoza tossed three complete innings of relief work allowing one run on two base hits issued one walk and one hit batsman to earn the save.
