Martha Garcia blasts a grand slam HR

The C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team under the guidance of head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr., and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavidez and Roly Salinas resumed the district diamond battles on Friday, April 6, 2018 by entertaining the Floresville Lady Jaguars in a 7:00 PM District 29-6A softball diamond encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center with the ever present Maverick Nation in attendance.

The Lady Mavericks flexed their night by making short work of this contest forcing the 10-run rule over the Lady Jaguars by the final score of 12 to 2 in five innings. The Lady Mavs were led by Martha Garcia and Daniels Rodriguez at the plate who combined their efforts to drive in 9 out of the 12 runs scored including a grand slam home run by Martha Garcia.

The visiting Lady Jaguars took the early led in this contest with a lone run in the top half of the first inning on a game leadoff triple and a Lady Mavericks error. But the lead was short lived as the Lady Mavericks countered in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs to take the lead for good in this game with Thiana Reyes leading off the frame with a walk, with one out Martha Garcia stroked a single, with two outs Daniela Rodriguez blasted a two RBI triple to bring home both Thiana Reyes and Martha Garcia to give the Lady Mavericks a 2 to 1 over the Lady Jaguars.

In the bottom of the second the mighty Lady Mavericks broke this game wide open with a huge six run production with Kiana Diaz reaching on an error, Thiana Reyes reached safely on a fielder’s choice, Kayla Sifuentes also reached on an error to load the bases for Martha Garcia who blasted a grand slam homerun, Ariana Soto followed with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error, Daniela Rodriguez connected with an RBI single to bring home Ariana Soto, Kaytlyn Amaya belted and RBI single to drive in Daniela Rodriguez to give the Lady Mavericks a comfortable 8 to 1 lead in this game.

In the top of the third the Lady Jaguars score their final run of this game but the Lady Mavericks quickly got that run back in the bottom of the third with Thiana Reyes stroking a double, with one out Martha Garcia continued to swing a red hot bat by belting an RBI double to bring home Thiana Reyes.

The Lady Mavericks padded their lead with lone runs in the third and fourth innings and then brought an early conclusion to this contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the 10-run rule with Martha Garcia connecting with a one out double, with two outs Daniela Rodriguez came through once again with an RBI single to bring home Martha Garcia, Kaylyn Amaya put the finishing touch in this game with a solid fence rattling RBI triple to deliver Daniela Rodriguez home with the game winning run to give the Lady Mavericks the well earned 12 to 2 victory over the Lady Jaguars thus improving the district record to 4-3 to remain in sole possession of third place in the district race and improved their overall season record to 20-10. Starting pitcher Amy Flores earned the pitching victory with three complete innings of work inside the pitching circle with two solid scoreless innings in relief by Angie Escamilla.
