The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity softball team resumed their quest for the district title on Thursday, March 29. 2018 with a road trip to the Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas to tangle with the tough South San Lady Bobcats in a 7:00 PM marquee softball diamond matchup. The visiting Lady Eagles ventured into this game currently tied for third place in the district race with a 6-3 mark while the home standing Lady Bobcats came in currently perched in second place in the district race with a district record of 8-1.

The home standing Lady Bobcats flexed their muscles right off the bat in this contest as the first batter in the bottom half of the first inning connected with a single but was quickly gunned down at second on an attempted steal by the rifle arm of Lady Eagles standout catcher Brooke Diaz, the next batter in their lineup belted a double, Lady Bobcats third baseman Skye Estrada followed with a tow run homerun to give the Lady Bobcats the early 2 to 0 lead over the Lady Eagles.

In the bottom of the third the South San Lady Bobcats padded their lead with another two run out put courtesy of a hit by pitch, and RBI triple and an RBI single to take a 4 to 0 lead in this key matchup. In the bottom of the fourth the Lady Bobcats who are perennially known to force the issue playing small ball by moving runners along to get into scoring position for their heavy hitters in their lineup managed to tack on an insurance run to extend their lead over the Lady Eagles to 5 to0.

The usually potent Lady Eagles bats were silenced on this night by the Lady Bobcats stellar starting pitcher Sierra Velasquez who handcuffed the Lady Eagles to only five total hits (3 hits according to the San Antonio Express-News). The Lady Eagles finally broke up the potential shutout with what proved to be their only run in the top half of the first inning with Heather Ruiz reaching on an error, with one out Brooke Diaz was issued a base on balls, Janessa Garza followed with an RBI double to drive in Heather Ruiz but the Lady Eagles could not mount any further damage as the left two runners stranded in scoring position at second and third as the South San Lady Bobcats defeated the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles by the final score of 5 to 1 to remain one game behind the district leading Southwest Lady Dragons while the loss keeps the Lady Eagles tied for third place with Laredo Alexander both sporting identical district records of 6-4.
