Lady Eagles-Laredo Alexander Softball Game Report: Fri. Mar. 23, 2018

Lady Eagles defeat the

Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs 5 to 3

The talent laden and playoff contending Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team currently perched in fourth place in the District 29-6A softball race with a district record of 4-3 ventured to Laredo, Texas on Friday, March 23, 2018 for their long awaited rematch with the powerful Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs who are currently in third place in the district race sporting a district record of 5-2. The Lady Eagles entered this marquee matchup seeking to avenge a 7 to 6 loss at the hands of the Lady Bulldogs back on February, 27, 2018 in a thrilling contest that had the atmosphere of a third round playoff softball diamond game.

The much anticipated rematch took center stage at 5:00 PM at the United ISD Student Activity Center with the ever present Loyal Legion of Lady Eagles faithful and Lady Bulldogs’ supporters in attendance. This contest proved to be another epic battle that was not decided until the final out of this game with the Lady Eagles avenging their first round loss at the hands of the Lady Bulldogs by the final score of 5 to 3 with Kaitlin Galvan earning the pitching victory.

The visiting Eagle Pass Lady Eagles managed to dent the scoreboard first with a lone run in the top half of the first inning with Heather Ruiz leading off the game with a walk, Leslie Martinez reached safely on a fielder’s choice with Heather Ruiz being forced out at second the play, Leslie Martinez promptly stole second, Brooke Diaz grounded out to second enabling Leslie Martinez to scamper over to third on the play, Lorelei Morales, the Lady Eagles totally surprised everyone by pulling off a double steal with Lorelei Morales swiping second and Leslie Martinez stealing home to register the first run of the game.

The home standing and perennially tough Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs countered with a lone game tying run in the home half of the third inning with Kayla Martinez belting a single to lead off the frame, Celeste Ramirez followed with a single to put runners on first and second. With one out Lady Bulldogs leadoff batter Sheila Hernandez came through with a game tying RBI single to drive in Kayla Martinez.

In the top of the third the Lady Eagles broke up the one all tie with a lone run with Alexandra Martinez reaching safely on an error Kaylynne Ruiz belted an RBI double to bring home Alexandra Martinez with a the go ahead run to give the Lady Eagles a 2 to 1 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

In the top of the fifth the proud Lady Eagles padded their lead with a pair of runs with Heather Ruiz drawing a one out walk and immediately got into scoring position by stealing second. Leslie Martinez followed with a fence rattling RBI triple to drive in Heather Ruiz, Brooke Diaz continue to add to her team leading RBI total by lifting a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Leslie Martinez to give the Lady Eagles a 4 to 1 lead.

The Lady Eagles then tacked on what would eventually prove to be a lone insurance run in the top of the sixth with Lee Ann Dunn leading off the frame with a double, Kayla Ochoa advanced Lee Ann over to third with a sacrifice bunt, Lee Ann Dunn would later come home to give the Lady Eagles a 5 to1lead in this game.

In the bottom of the sixth Lee Ann Dunn took over the pitching chores from starting and eventual game winning hurler Kaitlin Galvan who hurled a solid five complete inning of play allowing just one run to the usually potent lady Bulldogs.

The game remained 5 to 1 heading to the bottom of the seventh where the Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs threatened to possibly tie or even take a possible walk off victory by plating two runs with Kayla Martinez stroking a one out single, Celeste Ramirez connected with a double to put runners on second and third with only one out, Sabrina Arce slapped and RBI single to bring home Kayla Martinez which prompted the Lady Eagles coaching staff to bring back starting hurler Kaitlin Galvan to put a halt to the potential uprising by the Lady Longhorns, with two outs Emma Steed belted an RBI single to bring home Celeste Ramirez but Kaitlin Galvan buckled down to retire the final batter on a line drive ground out to second to give the Lady Eagles the hard fought 5 to3 victory over the Lady Bulldogs and thus now move into a tie for third place in the district race along with the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs both now sporting identical district marks of 5-3.
