The high powered Eagle Pass Lady Eagles varsity girls’ softball team entertained the perennially tough Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 in a 7:00PM District 29-6A softball diamond opener at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center softball field in front of a good size crowd in attendance including the Loyal Legion of Lady Eagles followers. In a true nail biter the Eagles Pass Lady Eagles fell short of a potential comeback as the visiting Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs took a hard fought 7 to 6 victory over the Lady Eagles. Errors proved quite costly in this game.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead registering a pair of runs in the top half of the second inning on a walk to Viri Hernandez, a sacrifice by Stacy Alarcon and RBI single by Emma Steed and three stolen bases by Emma Steed to take a 2 to 9 lead in this key matchup.

In the top half of the third the Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs tacked on a lone run with Ari Herrera connecting with a one out single, with two outs standout first baseman Sophie Cavazos stepped up to the plate and blasted an RBI double that dented the top of the fence to drive inn Ari Herrera to extend their lead to 3 to 0 over the Lady Eagles. In the top of the fifth the Lady Bulldogs managed to add yet another lone run on a single by Ari Herrera a Lady Eagles error and an RBI double by Sheila Hernandez to take a stunning 4 to 0 lead over the Lady Eagles.

Laredo Alexander starting hurler Stacy Alarcon was pitching a gem as she held the usually potent Lady Eagles lineup hitless through four complete innings of play but that all changed in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

The potential shutout and no hit bid was quickly erased by Lady Eagle Alexandra Martinez who launched a 2-2 pitch over the fence for a solo homerun. Pinch hitter Emily Snyder followed with a single, Lee Ann Dunn stroked and RBI double to bring home Emily Snyder, with one out Leslie Martinez belted an RBI single to bring home Lee Ann Dunn, big RBI producing hitter Brooke Diaz stepped up to the plate and blasted an RBI double to drive in Leslie Martinez to tie the ball game at four runs apiece but the Lady Eagles then took the lead in this game when Brooke Diaz came around to score to give the Lady Eagles a 5 to 4 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

In the top of the sixth Leenette Krezdorn took over the pitching duties for the Lady Eagles replacing starting pitcher Kaitlin Galvan who up to that point had done an amicable job inside the circle. In the top of the sixth the Lady Bulldogs countered with a lone run to knot up the score at five runs apiece with a single by Ari Herrera another Lady Eagles error and an RBI double off the bat of Sheila Hernandez. The score remained tied heading to the top of the seventh.

In the top of the seventh the Lady Bulldogs broke up the tie courtesy of a pair of very costly Lady Eagles fielding errors, a single by Sheila Hernandez, a booming RBI by Sophie Cavazos that tattooed the wall with Sophie Cavazos later tallying a huge insurance run to give the Lady Bulldogs a 7 to 5 lead over the Lady Eagles.

In the bottom of the seventh with the heart of a true champion the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles fought back valiantly. Heather Ruiz led off the frame with a walk, with two outs Alexandra Martinez came through with a clutch RBI double, Martinez then promptly stole third to put the potential game tying run at third, but Lady Luck was not kind on this night as the final batter went down looking to end the game enabling the Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs to take home a huge victory by the final score of 7 to 6 over the gallant Eagle Pass Lady Eagles.
