The high powered C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks varsity girls’ softball team mentored by head coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. and assistant coaches Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, Corina Benavides, and Sergio Esquivel hit the road on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 with a trip to Laredo, Texas to open the program’s 12th ever season with a 7:00 PM season opening non-district diamond matchup against the always tough Laredo United Lady Longhorns at the United ISD Student Activity Center.

Martha Garcia led off the game by drawing a base on balls and later came around to score on one of the numerous errors made by the Lady Longhorns. Laredo United quickly tied up the score with a lone run in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third the Lady Mavericks broke up the tie by plating a pair of runs in that frame with Jasmin Ballones belting a one out single and Ariana Soto drawing a walk, both runners scored courtesy of another Lady Longhorn error, Laredo United came back in the bottom of the third to take the lead with a three run production.

Laredo United then padded their lead with single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings while the Lady Mavericks could only counter with a lone run in the top of the 6th. Laredo United held a seemingly comfortable 7 to 4lead heading to the top of the 7th inning.

The proud young and talented Lady Mavericks fought back with a bug four run production to stun the Laredo United Lady Longhorns by taking a one run lead in this game, But unfortunately Lady Luck was not kind on this night as the Laredo United Lady Longhorns came back in the bottom of the7th to tally a pair of runs to take the narrow 9 to 8 victory over the valiant Lady Mavericks who deserved a much better fate.
