The District 29-6A co-leading and playoff bound Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team mentored by head football coach Tom Gonzalez ventured to Del Rio, Texas on Friday, November 10, 2017 to culminate their regular and district season with a key 7:30 PM matchup against their long time and oldest rival the Del Rio Rams at Walter Levermann-Rams Stadium.  The visiting Eagles unleashed a well balanced offensive assault via the ground and through the airway that was complimented by an aggressive, hard hitting and suffocating defense enroute to a dominating 30 to 0 shutout victory over the Rams thus garnering the 2017 District 29-6A Co-Championship title along with the Southwest Dragons who were nearly upset by the South San Bobcats.

The visiting Eagles received the game’s opening kickoff and immediately set the tone for this game and giving their Loyal Legion of faithful fans in attendance a preview of coming attractions by engineering a 15 play 65 yard scoring drive with their patented running game and short range passing attack with the scoring drive being capped off with a one yard blast into the end zone by standout running back Dee Andre Torres with 7:17 showing on the first quarter clock,  Jose Riojas tacked on the point after to give the Eagles the early 7 to 0 lead over the Rams.

After an exchange of punts by both teams in which Eagles multi-talented punter Jose Riojas pinned the Rams deep in their own territory at the Del Rio two yard line,  the Eagles famed defensive unit that refer to themselves as the ”Land Sharks” featuring Mario Torres, Roger Ulloa, Sebastian Hernandez, Moi Rocha, Nico Moyeda, Kristian Barcena Josh Monsivais, Ryan Chisum and company took their turn to get into the scoring parade as linebacker David Kypuros intercepted a Rams attempt and waltzed into the end zone from two yards out with 11:56 remaining in the second quarter,  Jose Riojas split the uprights with the point after to extend the Eagles lead to 14 to 0 over the Rams.

The Eagles potent and explosive offense continued employ their short passing game with Jose Riojas, Rey Mendoza, Albert Guevara and Norby Zavala taking turns in hauling in the airmail and tailback Dee Andre Torres churning up yardage on the ground, the Eagles orchestrated a 71 yard scoring drive that was punctuated with a 26 yard sprint to pay dirt by Dee Andre Torres with 1:56 left before halftime.  The point after attempt failed but the Eagles had now padded their lead to 20 to 0 over the Rams.

With time winding down in the first half Eagles defensive back Josh Monsivais intercepted a Del Rio pass and returned it 35 yards to the promise land for an apparent touchdown return but the score was wiped out by a penalty for a lock behind the back on the play so the Eagles instead had to settle for a 32 yard field goal; by placekicker Jose Riojas with only six seconds left in the first half giving the Eagles a seemingly comfortable 23 to 0 lead over the Rams.

The Eagles then punctuated this contest on their first set of downs of the second half when they manufactured a well executed 9 play 70 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a five yard run into the end zone by stellar slot back Jose Riojas with 5:06 left in the third period.  Jose Riojas then converted the point after to close out the scoring for the night as the stingy Eagles “Land Sharks” defense took over from that point to secure the 30 to 0 shutout victory over the Del Rio Rams to capture the 2017 District 29-6A co-championship title.  The victorious Eagle Pass Eagles improved their overall season record to 8-2 and finish with a district mark of 6-1

*Editor’s Note- The last Eagle Pass Eagles District championship title was recorded in 1996.

Eagle Pass Sports Central congratulates the 2017 mighty Eagle Pass Eagles varsity football team on their outstanding accomplishment of winning the District 29-6A co-championship crown and wish you the very best of luck in your bi-district round playoff matchup against the McAllen Bulldogs.  The entire community of Eagle Pass, Texas as well as the Loyal Legion of Eagles faithful is invited to come out to the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium this coming Friday night and support the mighty Eagles.
